Studies have shown that reading for just 2 mins everynight can make a world of difference in a persons success and learning. Take a look at the chart above, reading for 20 minutes puts people in the 90th percentile (above 90% of those in their age bracket). Reading everyday has always been proven to make people better spellers, increase vocabulary, enhance understanding and awareness and make them more well rounded individuals. I expect my students to read AT LEAST 20 minutes everynight. No Excuses!!! I rarely assign a lot of homework, aside from the occasional time needed to finish a project or work assigned in class. As such, I expect students to be reading on a regular basis. I have many options in the classroom library that are available to check out and I am always willing to offer a good recommendation. The best spot to check out is our school library, Mrs Brown has an absolutley fantastic selection of books available and if she doesn't have it, she will get it!! Another option is owning books yourself and creating a personal library. Chapters/indigo and amazon are great ways to buy books as well as at the Scholastic Book Fair that happens three times a year. In my intermediate class, we will have many opportunities to share our reading through a variety of book talks, reports, presentations and showcases. The students who succeed the most in these assignments are the ones who ensure they have many options to pull from. Get a book...or seven, and start reading! |
